  • Remove all debris from gutters and make sure drain pipes are clear
  • Check the roof for loose or missing shingles and replace
  • Check chimney and other exhaust pipes to be sure flashing is properly sealed
  • Drain and store hoses
  • Drain outdoor irrigation system
  • Drain and turn off all outside faucets
  • If you have a home AC unit be sure to cover the condenser for the winter

Inside:

  • Make sure your furnace is ready for the winter - filters should be vacuumed clean or replaced.
  • Reverse ceiling fans (clockwise) to keep warm air down
  • Call a chimney sweep if you haven’t had your chimney cleaned in the last two years. A good sweep can also tell you if you any bricks or mortar need repair
  • Insulate any exposed pipes
  • Insulate your hot water tank
  • Caulk to seal drafty windows
  • Add weather striping to the bottom and sides of drafty doors
  • If you have a sump pump in your basement make sure it’s working properly

Lastly, don’t get caught by surprise. Make sure you’re ready for the first storm with snow blower, shovels, salt and sand.
